Engineering Student Success: Supporting Math, Literacy, and Science Through Engineering Design [Challenges]

Monday, February 2, 2026 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EST)

Description

Join former Virginia STEM teacher and current Program Manager for The League of Young Inventors, Mallory Schmidt for an interactive Lunch & Learn designed for elementary school leaders navigating Virginia’s updated Science Standards of Learning and shifting accountability priorities. This session explores how hands-on learning experiences rooted in the engineering design process can support what Virginia’s science standards now ask students to do, including applying knowledge through inquiry, analyzing data, engaging in academic discourse, and using evidence to explain their thinking. Participants will consider how engineering design challenges can reinforce math and literacy goals rather than compete with them. Through a walk-through of a design challenge, participants will gain practical insight into how schools can protect meaningful STEM learning while supporting student success across content areas.
